I’ve attached a couple of photos. My granddaughter, Kairi, who will be 18 months soon. Her baby brother will be born Feb. 5th by C section – that is also the date my Tom and my best friend of 44 years, Jan Riley Morton (also classmate) passed away. It will be nice to have 3 wonderful lives to celebrate that day, especially one being a birth!
Chris and family only wanted baby stuff, so the tree was surrounded with big packages of cases of diapers and wipes and garage sale bargain clothing for both kids. Our Christmas together was a week ago. We video chatted with Mike in Colorado for an hour and 10 minutes today and opened presents to one another during the video chat.
Brought Mom’s favorite painting upstairs and hung it in her bedroom. She lost her mother at age 11 and poppies were her mother’s favorite. Mom was pretty touched to have it closer by her. She’s 86 1/2 and as you know, has lived with me now 3 years. Glad she’s here in more ways than one!!!
Take care dear friend. Momma and I have been alone as well, but it’s been a great day.
Dorothy Arlene Taylor Hartzler age 95 formerly of Iowa City and Kalona died December 18, 2020.
Dorothy Arlene Taylor was born December 29, 1924, in Johnson County, Iowa the daughter of Margaret (Campbell) Taylor and Thomas Taylor of rural Iowa City. The youngest of four children, she graduated from University High School in Iowa City and worked at First National Bank in Iowa City prior to her marriage. She married Herb Hartzler Jr. on May 23, 1944. She worked for many years in the office at West High School in Iowa City, a position that she thoroughly enjoyed because of the students and staff.
Dorothy enjoyed her life, as an avid supporter of the Iowa Hawkeyes, many years of square dancing with Herb, and being the chief cook in the household because she was a very good cook! Most of all, the most joy in her life was her family, her children and later as grandchildren and great grandchildren came along there was nothing, she wouldn’t do for them as she dearly loved them all.
Her family includes her three children, Kathy (Glenn) Knight of Kissimmee, Florida; Jeff (Michele) Hartzler of Cedar Rapids, Iowa; and Jim (Susan) Hartzler of Byron, Minnesota; five grandchildren, Glenn Roy (Alyaa), Katie (Gio), Henry (Amanda), Greg and Emma and three great grandchildren, Hana, Kate and Greyson. She was preceded in death by her husband and three brothers.
No public services are planned for this time, a celebration of her life will be held at a later date to be announced.
Alan and Janelle Huey shared another treasure from their West Hi memorabilia. Here’s what Alan told us:
It was part of the West Side Story. I’m guessing they put out a sort of parody like the Daily Iowan used to do. Don’t know if you recall, but The Daily Iowan put out a satire edition once in a while, and they ran a story about the Pope blessing Iowa from a jet as he passed over on a US visit. The Iowa City Associated Press writer, read it, and re-wrote it as an AP article. The Des Moines Register picked it up and it also appeared there, as serious news. But all that is conjecture on my part.
Kong Goes West
I’ll get the storage box back out at my earliest opportunity. It’s on a shelf in the garage, and I have to move two cars and get out the ladder to get to it.
Arnie Moore brought this photo from Alan Huey to our attention this week

The photo was part of the memorabilia my mom collected over the years. She passed away in Feb and my sister divided up the old tidbits among us sibs that Mom had stored in tubs. In the photo, I was in eighth grade at Southeast. The division between City High and West was always a little odd as I lived much closer to City than West, but there ended up 30 or so of us from Southeast that went to West.
Note, some of the wrestlers (at least my cousin, Ed Aldeman)were 7th graders. From 1969 per my calculation.
I sent a partial of the flip side so you can see the sports write up about one of Iowa’s great basketball teams

Dave, do you remember the winter snow when some of the U-High kids (I think) carved out “Big Nurse” in giant letters on the side of the hill behind the parking lot? It was the day of a fresh snow.
I’m watching “One flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest” and made me think of it. Hope all in your world are safe and healthy. We’re good here.
We lost our first church member to Covid last Saturday – he was 60, young family, married late in life. Had other health issues, but was stable and fine one day, and two days later was gone. Another church family lost their 21 year old son – they don’t if it was an accident or suicide – they are leaning suicide because he wasn’t a risk taker at all. So sad.
We had our Thanksgiving last weekend with my family safely – just my youngest son and his wife and daughter – little Kairi – she’s 16 months old now. I had food coma for two days. LOL
Mom and I will be alone tomorrow and that’s just fine by us. We’ll pick up a Papa Murphy’s pizza after dinner to keep refrigerated for tomorrow noon. Work on a puzzle I started yesterday and watch some TV – laid back day. After having my stem cell injection in my right shoulder for a shredded rotator cuff, about 2/3 of the way into physical therapy, I started going downhill. It was quite frustrating and no one knew what was going on and eventually after 12 sessions, they simply dismissed me. So, I took the bull by the horns and went to my long standing PT guy, Dan, and sure enough, he knew just what I needed, and after just one visit, I felt so much better. They had never manually manipulated my shoulder joint – after only 6 sessions with Dan, I’m cut loose to work on things from home now – just some strengthening exercises to continue and beef up each 2-3 weeks. My range of motion improved 50-62 degrees since seeing him – my shoulder was nearly frozen. I’m so glad I went to him for his evaluation and care.
I’m now sleeping my 8 hours uninterrupted again, which is huge for me, and I no longer hurt when I’m NOT doing anything. Those were the only times I was in pain – sitting and watching TV and sleeping. Didn’t make sense to me at all. So, this year, I’m very grateful for Dan, my physical therapist, and I got choked up today telling him what he means to me in his profession. I sanitized my hands right in front of him, took his hands in mine, and told him what a blessing he is to me. He said I made his day, but had already made his day seeing what great improvement I’ve made and how much better I feel.
